Artistic Director & Choreographer Lux Aeterna Dance Company

Of Jacob Kujo Lyons, former L.A. Times critic Lewis Segal says, there is no more-brilliant choreographer in Los Angeles at the moment.

Named by the Beverly Hills Outlook as Choreographer of the Year 2008, Kujo directs and choreographs an award-winning dance company called Lux Aeterna, which has been making major waves in the L.A.-area dance scene. Kujos eclectic, hybrid choreography has been called drop-dead awesome by the L.A. Times, and draws from his vast experience in breaking/break-dancing, as well as his more recent training in ballet, modern dance, and Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatic partnering, or body-to-body.

Lux Aeterna regularly performs to sold-out crowds at major hip hop and contemporary dance festivals, such as the San Francisco Hip Hop Dance Fest and Celebrate Dance, and two evening-length hip hop dance/theater shows at the huge Ford Amphitheatre Breaking the Cypher and the Juice Hip Hop Dance Festival, both of which Kujo also co-directed. Kujo and Lux Aeterna were presented with the 2007 Lester Horton Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performance Company, for their work in breaking choreographic boundaries. Kujo has also received 2008 Lester Horton Dance Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography Short Form and Outstanding Achievement in Performance Male.

In preparing for this revolutionary choreographic work, Kujo took a tangent from his remarkable b-boy career, beginning to study dance formally, earning a BS in Dance Kinesiology from CSU Northridge.. Hes studied modern dance and ballet with Dr. Paula Thomson from Toronto, postmodern dance with Rudy Perez from New York, acrobatic partnering with Stephan Choiniere of Cirque du Soleils Zumanity, and Diavolo technique with Jacques Heim.

One of the most respected names in the b-boy world for 18 years, Kujo is internationally recognized for his explosive, unorthodox, and pioneering style. After bursting on to the international scene in the world-famous music video Its Like That by Run DMC, Kujo (along with his legendary b-boy crew, Soul Control) helped to blaze trails in power moves, creative freeze transitions, and the unorthodox side of breaking, inspiring countless numbers of b-boys and b-girls worldwide. Hes competed in major international competitions in Germany, England, Korea, and Japan, and now judges some of the worlds biggest b-boy battles, such as Battle of the Year, Eurobattle, and Red Bulls BC One.

A creative daredevil as well as a b-boy, Kujo can be seen back-flipping into a pair of jeans in a national commercial for Levis. He was featured in the film Step Up 2: The Streets, and recently choreographed an underwater dance commercial in India for the detergent company Nirma, featuring the dancers of Lux Aeterna. He also works as a circus acrobat, performing a solo on aerial straps in Cirque Montage.

Kujo teaches world-wide as well, spreading awareness of the dynamic art of breaking through master classes and workshops in dance conventions and colleges throughout North America, Europe, Japan, South Africa, and Colombia. Hes also taught at the elite level, with special workshops for the Red Bull Beat Riders and Cirque du Soleils Quidam. Kujo has been teaching weekly breaking classes at the world-renowned Edge Performing Arts Center for 8 years, and gives master classes at Idyllwild Arts Academy.
